In May of 1994 forty pieces art created by the prolific serial killer, John Wayne Gacy, were set to be put up for auction. 200 potential buyers showed up, but by the end of the auction, over half the pieces were purchased by one man. Joe Roth spent nearly $20,000 to nab as much of Gacy’s artwork as possible. The successful businessman was taunted by people who showed up to protest the auction, however he remained undeterred as he made his bids. Gacy’s artwork was not destined to end up in Roth’s personal collection. He was going to burn them.
Roth contacted family members of Gacy’s victims to invite them to a special event. They gathered together in Napperville, Illinois and started up a bonfire. The crowd cheered as loved ones tossed the artwork into the flames. The first photograph features Harold Piest. His fifteen-year-old son, Rob, was the last victim. Kari Cahoon, shown in the third picture, is the sister of Richard “Rick” Johnston. Rick was only seventeen-years-old when he was murdered.
